A damaged tooth can be painful and leave your smile vulnerable to harmful infection. If your tooth has become compromised, a dental crown can provide protection, preventing further damage or decay from developing. At Perfect Smiles Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we believe that our patients should not have to sacrifice quality for beautiful results. Drs. Ryan Maher and Joe Olechowski can place a custom-made porcelain crown at our Totowa, NJ, practice that closely resembles your natural tooth both in appearance and function. Additionally, we can also replace a missing tooth with an implant-supported crown.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a prosthetic designed to mimic the shape of a tooth. When placed over your natural tooth, the crown can reinforce and preserve the remaining structure. Receiving a dental crown can restore your ability to bite and chew properly.
Is a Crown Right for You?
Dental crowns can be placed over teeth to:
- Restore a severely worn tooth
- Provide reinforcement for a cracked tooth
- Protect a tooth weakened after root canal therapy
- Anchor a dental bridge
For patients who have lost a tooth or undergone extraction, we can provide implant-supported restorations to completely replace your tooth. Dental crowns may also be used for cosmetic treatments to cover a tooth that is misshapen or stained. In some cases, porcelain veneers may be best suited for front teeth.
Typically, dental crowns are recommended for larger instances of breakage or decay. In cases or minor to moderate damage, a filling, inlay, or onlay may be sufficient to repair your tooth. Your doctor can evaluate your bite during your consultation to determine whether a dental crown is the best solution for you.
Benefits of Porcelain Crowns
While dental crowns made from metal can provide the same basic functions, those made from porcelain provide the additional benefit of natural-looking aesthetics. Your custom porcelain crown can be color-matched to surrounding teeth so it blends seamlessly with the rest of your smile. Additionally, the realistic appearance of these crowns makes them a better option for restoring teeth that are highly visible.
The Treatment Process
Receiving a dental crown typically requires two appointments. To begin, the damaged or decayed portions of the tooth will be removed. Dr. Maher or Dr. Olechowski will then reshape the tooth, removing a small amount of the exterior to allow room for the crown. We will then make impressions of your bite from which your custom dental crown will be crafted.
A dental crown can restore the proper function and appearance of your smile for lasting results.
Once your finalized restoration is complete, you will return to our office. Your doctor will then check the crown for quality and cement it to the existing tooth structure. When placing your dental crown, we will use the utmost care to ensure a comfortable, secure fit for long-lasting results.
